weather could have on your holiday travel plans. the wet weather is creating dangerous driving conditions. sal is tracking the accidents on the bay area roadways this morning. a man slips off a cliff and falls to his death. and a terrorist attack in tel aviv happened hours ago. "mornings on 2" begins right now. well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's november 21st. it's one of the busiest travel days of the year, especially at bay area airports. ktvu's christien kafton is live at sfo with what you can expect if you are getting ready to head out the door to catch a flight. >> reporter: good morning. i will tell you one thing,

everyone traveling today can expect big crowds. take a look. you can see there's still some wet roads left over from the rain we had last night into this morning. a lot of activity here at sfo. as we come on inside the terminal, you can see that activity carries on inside the airport here. you can see that crowds are now starting to build here. we're at the -- we're in terminal 2. this is the virgin airlines. the rain we saw this morning, not slowing down people's plans to travel. we saw a lot of passengers coming and going. passengers we talked to say they knew that the crowds were gonna be like this so they made sure to add a little bit more time to prepare for long lines and crowds. >> i was always stressed out about getting here. >> reporter: ktvu was there this morning as delayed passengers collected their luggage early this morning

after major delays last night into this morning. at least 81 flights were canceled yesterday due to the rain and the low cloud cover forced the airport to shut down one runway. the faa restricted the number of landings to 76 an hour, as opposed to the 96 per hour yesterday. that meant that some travelers were faced up to delays up to seven hours. >> we tried switching planes. everything was filled up. nothing we could do. go to sleep for about four hours. nothing but sit around. >> reporter: things are getting busy here at the airport. crowds are starting to pack in. we saw a few delays, not a whole lot. a few delays, particularly to fort lauderdale and boston. but otherwise, flights seem to be on schedule. we're checking in as frequently as we can with the big boards to see how flights are coming in and out. it's not just our weather here. it's weather in other parts of the country. we have an update to get an

update -- we're going too get an update about how -- to get an update on how things are going here. we will continue to see how your travel plans are going. we'll have more live reports for you throughout the morning and day. for now we're live at sfo, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. we're also tracking the thanksgiving travel rush in the south bay. this is what passengers were dealing with early this morning at mineta. passengers are being warned that weather could cause for delays and make for longer travel lines getting to the airport. if you are about to head out, give yourself extra time. the rain, wet roads. it's dangerous driving. this happened in oakland overnight. this driver lost control because of the -- because of the rain. this is on 8 8 -- this is on

880. this was at the broadway offramp on 580 in oakland. the chp says about five inches of water built up there which is a major concern for drivers. a sad story in oakland where a man plummets to his death. he apparently slipped and fell into a deep quarry last night. ktvu's alex savidge joins us live to explain what caused the victim to go out in the dark. >> reporter: good morning. this man's body was recovered. it's believed he drowned. firefighters say he went out in the rain last night trying to find his lost cat and he ended up falling off this sleep cliff behind his house and he landed in the water. this is a water-filled rock quarry right below his home here. this is next to the rockridge shopping center. the oakland fire department launched a search around 7:00 last night after the man's

friend reported him missing. rescuers used a boat. one rescue worker rappelled down the cliff. just before 1:00 this morning, they found the man's body about 30 feet under water. one of the drivers involved in this recovery operation explain how they locate a body in dark, murky water like this. >> we use a circle search where we set an anchor at the bottom and a buoy at the top. we have drivers stationed on the bottom and another diver that circles that anchor searching for our target. >> reporter: so far, authorities are not releasing the identity of the man who died here last night. but the fire department will describe him as being in his late 50s or early 60s. firefighters say in addition they did end up finding a cat up on the hillside above this old quarry. they do believe it belongs to the man who lost his life here

last night. we're live in morning in oakland, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. to the continuing violence in the middle east, a bomb went off on a city bus in tel aviv. the bus was going past the military building when it exploded. there are reports that a man carried a package on the bus and it blew off after he got off the bus. coming up -- a report about all of the fighting. back here at home, one of the suspects in a violent strings of crime in san jose will go in front of the judge for the first time. jonathan wilbanks is facing charges of murder, attempted murder and robbery. now, he and another man are accused of four robberies, a deadly attempted carjacking and a shooting that injured a police officer friday night. now, the two of them were caught on surveillance video at

a 7/11 store where a man was shot and killed by the suspect. a $20,000 reward is being offered for information for the man who is still out there on the loose. people in palo alto are being warned about two different scams involving energy and water services. the first one involves someone claiming to be from a gas company they claim a product they are selling lowers your bill. the city says the scammers often mention pg&e. that's not palo alto's utility company. the other scam involves a fake water leak insurance company and that will offer insurance against high water bills, they claim. sal, this is your day. i mean, it's gonna be a busy day. >> i was trying to look at the chp list. >> take your time.

>> you know, things will pop up and it's like oh, my gosh, ere's another crash and that's the way it's been, especially in the first few hours. let's go out and take a look at the bay bridge. we do have it a little lighter than usual now. but it's backed up to the middle of the parking lot. we do have a lot of fender- bender type accidents or just nonreal serious crashes but the kind of crashes that happen when someone loses control, ends up hitting a guardrail or a tree. that kind of thing. let's take a look amount the su know grade -- take a look amount the sunol grade -- a look at the sunol grade. there's slow traffic on 880. also slow traffic getting out to 92. >> let's go to steve. well, santa rosa says mostly cloudy. although ukiah says light rain and all the way down to santa

rosa -- san jose. so there's still some in there but the main core of the system is pushing east and south. it is weakening. but there's decent totals. oakland hills, 1.5. emeryville, 1.04. the city 1.25. there were heavier amounts towards -- der row. rodeo -- cazadero, rodeo 2.83. sfo and hayward, both about 45/100ths. kind of winding down. but still kind of misty, drizzly, cloudy, fog being reported. santa rosa says fog. light showers up in marin county south over towards the east bay. again, most of the heavier stuff looks like it is out of the peninsula and starting to head down more towards san

jose, santa clara and even that looks weaker now. there's been reports of moderate rain towards san jose. you can see down towards morgan hill some rain and scotts valley. we're not down with the cloud cover. it will be a cloudy to mostly cloudy day. but high pressure showing signs of building in later today and tomorrow. this pattern will end with rain in the morning. clouds, kind of windy in the higher elevations. but i think that will decrease as well. very, very mild. 60s on the temperatures. it's 45 in tahoe. a south wind at 33. it rained all night at the keys. partly sunny, partly cloudy tomorrow but the rain will be ending. fog, though, valley fog will be really thick. visibility could be zero unless there is a breeze. tori and dave? >> yes. jim harbaugh will get a lot of questions today at his noontime press conference about who will be his can be. there are a lot of fans who

palestinian buildings. i have a daughter, she's frightened. >> more than 130 palestinians have been killed since the belining of all of this -- beginning of all of this violence. most of them are women and children. hopes for a truce are fading after a bus explosion in tel aviv this morning. alison burns is in our washington, d.c. with the role that hillary clinton is playing trying to end the violence. alison? >> reporter: secretary clinton is in egypt right now after meetings with israeli and palestinian leaders. she issued a statement this morning calling the bus explosion in tel aviv a terrorist attack. at least 18 people were hurt. three seriously. hamas praised the attack but did not claim responsibility. secretary clinton says the u.s. strongly condemns the bombing and is ready to provide any assistance that israel requires. there were high hopes for a truce when she arrived in

israel less than 24 hours ago but the bombing and israel's response launching new attacks in gaza is a dramatic setback. she's still pushing for a longer term solution. >> the goal must be security and advances the security of palestinians and israelis. >> there are reports that the tentative outline of a truce calls for a 72-hour cease-fire to give more time for some sort of diplomatic breakthrough. reporting live from washington, d.c., alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:17. new this morning, general john allen is back at his job as a top u.s. and nato commander in afghanistan. allen returned to kabul after the announcement between the

general and the general petraeus scandal. allen was supposed to testify before the senate committee on his nomination to become the commander of u.s./european command and the top nato general but that nomination is on hold. his return to afghanistan comes the day as the same day the deadly suicide near a u.s. military base in kabul. the taliban has claimed responsibility for the bombing. two afghan guards and five civilians were injured when two people wearing suicide vests blew themselves up. 7:18. a controversy new documentary about the o.j. simpson case claims a serial killer may be the real killer of o.j. simpson's ex-wife, nicole and her friend, ron goldman. >> he was doing drugs, getting arrested a lot and traveling across the country when he wasn't in jail.

>> this is from "my brother the serial killer" a criminal profiler claims serial killer glen rogers confessed to the killings, rogers once claims to have killed 70 people. he's been sentenced to death in florida. police in los angeles say they will investigate the claim in that documentary but they don't believe that rogers was involved in the murder. well, a missouri mother who told police that her son was plotting a shooting massacre at a movie theater is talking for the first time since her son was arrested. she says her son recently asked if he was a failure. authorities say her son blake had plotted to attack a movie theater during the premiere of the new twilight film. she says her son had been undergoing mental health treatment and shows sign of as asburger's. >> an investigator says the man

revint purchased two assault rifles and 400 rounds of ammunition. blake was arrested in 2009 after allegedly following a walmart clerk with a knife and rubber mask after watching the horror movie "halloween." nurses at ten bay area hospitals will be locked out until sunday. that's after they staged strike at eight sutter health hospitals and two in san jose operated by hca. >> stand up and fight back! >> the nurses are upset after the hospitals un laterally im-- implemented. the hospitals say they need to cut costs because of the current economic situation. a restaurant in sausalito is providing a thanksgiving feast for free one day early. avatars restaurant will dish up 1300 meals for those in need.

busiest days before thanksgiving. we're getting good news after months of deadlock between the port and the union, contract talks are resuming and that means the port will be back open for business today but expect long lines as those trucks line up coming back to make their deliveries. 7:24. and we check in now with sal. it's been a busy morning with traffic and the weather. how are things looking on the sunol grade? >> yeah, and steve says this is gonna be a morning thing only. the afternoon should be better. but this morning's commute has been kind of severe. sunol grade, you can barely see it here but there's weather moving through. we've had slow traffic through here and it is continuing to be a bad commute out of pleasanton to fremont and san jose. moving along and taking a look at 880, it's been a little lighter than usual driving past the coliseum getting to the airport. there's still long-term parking

available sat the oakland airport. the 101 peninsula looks good. you saw christien kafton up there monitoring the flights at sfo. some people have already been delayed but yesterday there was a big delay day. we'll be checking that for you and christien kafton will have another report coming up soon. let's go to steve. >> correct. there are some areas getting some rain. others are getting a -- are gray. 60 in oakland. 45 in tahoe. there is a lot of cloud cover, even though some of that rain is ending. most of the rain looks to be ending. there's still some bursts of it. vacaville, fairfield back to oakland, east bay a little bit towards san jose. things look like they are winding, even to cloverdale, things not really popping up. there could be light rain. overall, the trend. a little bit of rain. union city, hayward, fremont,

also over the sul noel grade. over san jose proper more clouds than anything else. and really starting to fall apart, the system in the valley. isolated rain and kind of a steady rain for some. high pressure will build in. so the rain will be ending. there will still be a lot of cloud cover, very, very mild, though, maybe some partial clearing. it looks like the pattern ends and we might have to wait until the first week of december before the next rain moves in. i guarantee. i guarantee, there's gonna be some big-time valley fog and visibility can be awful. that won't be the coast. that will be inland. back to you. 7:27. if you like doing your holiday shopping online, there is a warning about those deliveries. the advice from the police to keep you from becoming a crime victim. we're live in san francisco where four cars go up in flames. we'll tell you why the owner believes it was arson. we're live in san jose at the scene of a fatal accident.

it is 7:30. we're tracking breaking news in san jose. janine de la vega has just arrived on the scene of a fatal accident and has information

about how this is impacting traffic. >> reporter: that's right. we just pulled up here. we're at alum rock and jackson. the roads are blocked off. there's plenty of police activity here. there is a body laying in the middle of the street. there is a yellow tarp on top of it. we don't know if it's a man or a woman. right now, we just have limited information. but police do tell us around 6:00 a.m. this was a pedestrian crossing the street and hit by a car. we know that the car took off so they are investigating this as a hit and run. at this point, we do not have a description of that car or the driver and, again, we don't have any information on the victim but i just got off the phone with the police spokesperson who tells me that he is en route and will be filling us in on the details. right now, the own -- only the eastbound lanes of jackson avenue are open and the westbound lanes are closed. back out here are live.

you can see, police are directing traffic. they are trying to keep people away from the scene because this is still active and they are investigating. we don't know if rain played a factor. it's drizzling out here right now. we're not sure if it is slick roads. we hope to have more information for you a little bit later on "mornings on 2." reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco police and arson crews investigating a suspicious early-morning fire. ktvu's tara moriarty live in the bayview district with the latest details. tara? >> reporter: well, there were about four cars that were torched. this was one of them. you see how charred out it is. if we step over here, you can see where it used to be parked over here in this car poet. right here where this empty spot is where it used to be. about 20 minutes ago, crews had to come out here because there was smoke coming from the car. they wanted to make sure they had got the flames out

completely. you can see there's gas and electrical lines on the side of the house. the smell of gas, we should point out, is very overpowering right here. the man who is working on restoring all of these cars tells us he has received threats in the past. all of this could be the work of an arsonist. four cars were torched in a fire that broke out just before 5:00 this morning at a home off thomas and eagle streets. some were vintage cars including a corvette and camaro. take accloseer look, it looks like the car originated in the gas tank. the cap was removed. raul vasquez who lives next door says he's just glad no one was hurt. >> oh, yeah, thank you god. still shaking. it was scary, ma'am. >> reporter: how high were the flames? kind of like the gate, 12 feet. something like that. >> reporter: now, a flat bed tow truck is taking the rest of

the cars to the yards where police and arson will take a better look. you can see they are pulling out of the driveway right now. crews were able to extinguish this fire pretty quickly so the flames never got too bad or spread to nearby houses. so that's more good news. this fire remains under investigation. live from san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. now to our continuing coverage to the violence in the middle east. diplomats around the world, including secretary of state, hillary clinton, scram bemed to negotiate a cease-fire. the fighting continues. our reporter is in gaza city joining us live where israeli air strikes show no sign of letting up. ben, what happened to the cease- fire that was supposed to start yesterday? >> reporter: well, last night we were speaking with hamas officials, our colleagues in jerusalem were speaking with israeli officials there. it definitely looked like if it had not reached an agreement

yet that one was coming but apparently there were some disagreements within the israeli government itself according to the israeli media sources and essentially they could not come to an agreement. so the whole thing sort of went on hold. u.s. secretary of state, hillary clinton, is in the region. she's been meeting with israeli officials, palestinian officials in ramallah. she's now in cairo as well trying to push forward with the cease fire but really since last night, there really has not been much progress or at least public progress towards a cease-fire. in fact, today, at noon, local time, when that bus in tel aviv was hit by a bomb, that really did ratch chet up the tension -- ratchet up the tension quite a lot. in fact, right where i'm standing, after the news spread of the bombing, there was a very large explosion from an israeli air strike just nearby.

>> ben, has anyone claimed responsibility for the bus attack? >> reporter: no. nobody actually has. now, initially, there were -- there was -- there are moves in gaza city that were announcing that this was the work of so- called lions from the west bank and some people assumed that because they are coming from hamas, the announcement was coming from hamas-controlled mosques, that hamas was claiming responsibility. no one has claimed responsibility. hamas did quote/unquote bless the operation saying that, according to one hamas official, that it was a natural reaction to what's going on in gaza. but until now, even the israeli authorities are not pointing a finger and blame at any specific group or faction. >> ben, i saw in one of our earlier reports that the streets are pretty empty and

this conflict has been going on for years. but what will it take for this recent rash of violence to end? >> reporter: well, i think it's pretty clear. both sides have laid out how they envision. okay. we just heard an outgoing rocket here. my producer saw one. anyway to get back, what they with like both sides, both sides would like a cessation of attacks. hamas doesn't want any more targeted assassination of hamas officials. they would like a lifting of the blockade. i mean, really just to bring immediate calm to the area. both sides need to stop firing at one another. then we shall see if that sort of quiet will hold. but it's very tenuous and events like what we saw in tell asleeve today shake any sort of effort to try to bring about a little bit of calm. >> all right. >> reporter: tori?

>> thank you, ben joining us about the crisis in the middle east. thank you and stay safe. 7:37. back here at home, new this morning, we just received this video. this is of an early-morning apartment fire in antioch. it started around 5:00 this morning. it's the delta view apartment on delta fair boulevard. that very same building caught fire monday night. investigators don't know yet if today's fire is a new one or just a flareup from the old one of the these ten people had to  be displaced this that fire on monday. luckily no one was hurt in today's early-morning fire. 7:38. let's check in with sal castanedo. what's happening in contra costa county, sal? >> well, we're looking at it. it seems to be a little bit slow like it would on a normal wednesday but some areas are better than others. let's take a look at highway 4. we have slow traffic as usual come out of that construction zone demarcated by that

triangle. in bay point we have traffic. 24 between walnut creek and oakland moderate lit heavy and then 80 is better than normal. we do have a little slow -- a little bit of slow traffic. 880 is slow down to fremont. moving along to some live picture. there it is. bay bridge, certainly lighter than usual. we're waiting for this day that would you see when a lot of people are not going today. tomorrow we won't have a big commute, if at all and then friday the same thing. taking a look at 237, westbound. there is a little bit of slow traffic there as well. 7:39. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. >> you are welcome, steve. good morning. rain kind of winding down, still some. you saw san jose over to the sunol grade, it looks like it doesn't want to end over there. kind of mostly cloudy.

very, very mild. the system is moving east. it's a very warm system, also south, still some rain to the north. but we're kind of caught right there with things kind of quieting down. we'll focus on some of the areas, but some of the totals not bad. emeryville, 1.40. santa rosa, almost 1 inch. crockett, rodeo, ben neap shaw, all around 9/10. there's also reports of 2 to 3 up towards mendocino county. there's good numbers up there. sausalito, 1.50. sfo, hayward about .50. and clayton .45 off marsh creek road. .3 down to the santa cruz mountains and san jose. things are really starting to break up. still some scattered showers, light rain drizzle towards antioch as well. concord, walnut creek. over on highway 24, radar beam just swept by. the sunol grade -- when the

pattern sets up, when is this going to end. we see sunol pleasanton. if you have to travel or commute, yes, rain for some. willow glen. santa cruz mountains things are quieter. a little bit of rain popping up. san mateo, san mateo bridge from woodside, palo alto, maybe heading over to the dumb -- dumbarton as well. 54 to 58. it's mild. we should start to get more of a westerly breeze. that will help things a littlepy. but a lot of cloud cover coming in. it will be a mostly cloudy day. morning rain, first -- misty gives way to partial clearing later on. but very high humidity. big-time fog will be setting up tonight into tomorrow. very mild. 60s on the temperatures. the rain line moves north. this is the last in the series. so we might have to wait until the last week of december until we bring rain in. sunny and warmer, tori. >> thank you. 19 minutes before 8:00. fremont police are warning

week. economists had expected the number to be higher. and hewlett-packard's stock is up about .5 right now. this is after a 12% drop yesterday morning. investors started the selloff after hp's announcement after massive accounting errors on the autonomy company. the securities and exchange information are now looking into the issue. in about 15 minutes, hostess brand heads to bankruptcy court. the company wants court approval to sell off its assets and liquidate. the latest round of talks did not reach a compromise acceptable for both sides. now hostess hopes to sell off the names and recipes for some of the its treats like dingdongs and twinkties. potentially dangerous toys are still being told this holiday season. the california public interest group released its 27th annual

trouble in toyland list. it names toys that they consider toxic and dangerous to kids and out of the 200 toys it surveyed, they found more than a dozen toys that have possible health risks. it's bun of the busiest travel weeks of the year. there is a new warning about travel risks from second -- from second-hand smoke in airports. the centers for disease control released that report. they claim the air quality around the designated smoking airports and airports is five times worse than smoke-free airports. the cdc says there's no safe level of second-hand smoke. it will end its flights between oakland and reno, nevada.

the -- southwest will end its flights between oakland and reno. >> nevada. recently, those flights have only been 55% full. they are the main tearier at reno airport. alaska and united will continue their flights between reno and the bay area. 7:47. not everyone will fly or drive this thanksgiving holiday. some people hope to avoid the crush by taking the train. but amtrak does expect many more passengers than normal. beginning today it is adding extra trains to the san joaquin and the capital corridor to handle the increased ridership expected this weekend. the construction of the new bay bridge span has reached a new milestone. crews have just finished transferring the weight of the bridge from a temporary platform to a single mile long cable. that means the span now officially holds its own weight. when completed, the bay bridge will be the longest suspension bridge of its kind in the world. it is set to open next labor

day. 7:48. well, president obama is back at the white house this morning following his whirlwind trip to southeast asia. here's some video. the president returning to joint base andrews in maryland around midnight last night. the white house says the president's trip was successful in that it showed that asia is strategically important to the united states, especially as a trading partner. and the white house says the president's visit too myanmar and cam -- visits to myanmar and cambodia demonstrate how the democracy influences other countries. well, ben bernanke is pushing both the obama administration and congress to reach a deal on how to avoid tax increases and spending cuts in that so-called fiscal cliff. bernanke says without a new deal, the fiscal cliff could trigger a recession next year. the congress has to act by january 1st m order to avoid the -- in order to avoid the automatic tax hikes and

spending cuts. san francisco's board of supervisors has approved an ordinance they say will better track the bedbug problem. thesupporters of the ordinance say this will help chart direction of the bedbugs in the city. the san francisco health department received 370 complaints about bedbugs in 2010. uc berkely out of thousands of dollars of computer equipment this morning after the latest burglary on campus. police say someone broke into a locked video lab in northgate hall sunday night and the suspect stole ten apple computers worth $23,000. for two very special turkeys, this day before thanksgiving is a big day in

the palo alto city council committee is in favor for allowing to let people live in their cars. the committee approved a three- month pilot program that would allow three people to slope in a car in designated parking lots across town. the car dwelling problem attracted the attention of the city council last year after complaints about the aggressive and unsanitary behavior about some car campers. san francisco's city supervisors approved legislation that will allow the building of microapartments. the city plans to build 375 of

these point-sized apartments. they are just 220 square feet. supporters say the microunits will help with the city's housing crisis. opponents are derned the microapartments will lead to increased rent prices throughout the city. 7:53. the 49ers new stadium landed its first sporting event two years before it is due to open. the 49ers will be hosting the kraft fight hunger bowl at the new stadium in 2014 when it opens. now, for the last ten years, that game has been played at at&t park, home of the giants. well, today, president obama will take part in the annual white house thanksgiving turkey pardon but with a twist. good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. it's wednesday, november 21st. well, a late-night tragedy in the east bay, a tragic death, a man falls down a sleep cliff and down into a water- filled quarry. ktvu's alex savidge has been on this story since 4:30 this morning. he's back now. you have the latest on how this tragedy happened. >> reporter: well, firefighters are thinking that essentially this man went out in the rainy weather last night trying to find his lost cat near this quarry behind his house. he ended up falling off this sleep cliff and down into the water below. it was very early on this morning when his body was recovered. authorities believe this man drowned. but it took five hours to find him, an exhaustive search. the oakland fire department started to search around 7:00 last night after the man's friend reported him missing and told authorities that he had

gone to find his cat near the quarry. searchers took a boat on the water. one of them rappelled down the side of the cliff. later on divers from the sheriff's office began to search under the where the. just before 1:00 a.m., they found the body at the bottom of the quarry, about 30 feet below the water. one of the drivers involved in this recovery operation explain to us how they use the circle search technique. >> they circle in an increasing radius until they either clear the area or find what we're looking for. if they don't find it, we move to a new location and start again. we use this technique because of the sheer terrain on the sides. >> reporter: firefighters said they did end up finding a cat above the quarry. they believe it belongs to the man who lost his life here. as we -- as we come back out live, so far authorities are not releasing the identity of

this man who died here last night as they still work to notify his family of his death but the fire department does say this man was in his late 50s, possibly in his early 60s. live this morning in oakland, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. thanks, alex. if you are about to head out the door, you will probably need extra time. the rain is making conditions dangerous. this accident happened in oakland when a driver lost control because of the rain on northbound 880 near broadway. no one was hurt. the rain is causing flooding throughout the bay area. this is what it looks like at the broadway offramp on 580 in oakland early in the morning. the chp says about five inches of water built up causing a concern for drivers. >> it's one of the busiest travel days of the year at bay area airports. ktvu's christien kafton is at sfo. he's been out there since 4:30

this morning. you can tell us what to expect if someone is planning to catch that flight. >> reporter: what a difference from 4:30 this morning. we saw the rain and wet roads. there is a little bit of aftermath left over from it. but the airport roads here are pretty clear. everybody is coming and going pretty well. the contrast from even an hour ago because it was pretty busy on the street corner. if you take a look inside the airport, he we'll take you inside. it is still somewhat busy here at the airport as you might expect on the day before thanksgiving. we're at terminal 2 looking over at the virgin american ticket counter. you can see there are definitely some clouds out here. people here at the airport have told me that travelers can expect to see crowds and lines but so far everything seems to be running quite well. passengers say so far so good this morning. >> i'm a little worried. now that you mention it, maybe i should have been.

so far so good. it's raining but other than that, i think it should be okay. >> reporter: it was a different story last night into early this morning. ktvu was there this morning as severely delayed passengers collected their luggage. at least 1 flights were canceled -- at least 81 flights were cancelled. some travelers were faced with delays of three, four, up to seven hours. >> they didn't do a very good job of, like, keeping us updated if things were gonna change or not and the crew was late getting back when we could have left earlier. they treated us fine once we were on the flight and were apologetic. i was just frustrated. everyone was. >> reporter: yeah, as you can tell, there were some tired and wornout travelers yesterday. now, all of those restrictions from yesterday have been lifted. there are a few delays for flights, specifically those coming in from the midwest,

chicago area and from the northeast, boston and when we looked at the big board that's exactly what we saw. a few delays from fort lauderdale, delays for flights coming in from boston. but otherwise, things are running well. arrive 90 minutes beforehand at the airport. we may start to see more delays because the delays start to stack up. christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. this is what passengers saw earlier this morning at mineta san jose international airport. it was busy. travelers are just warned that the weather could cause delays and also make it harder for you to get out to the airport. and the continuing violence in the middle east, a bomb exploded this morning on a city bus in tel aviv. the bus was carrying israel's

military -- was passing and then got on a bus and when he got off the bus there was an explosion. coming up, the impact of the people who live on both sides of the conflict. u.s. interior secretary ken salazar will be in marin to weigh in on the fate of a point reyes oyster farm. the company's lease is in contention and some want their operation shut down. the point rain just national seashore wants to turn it -- the point reyes national seashore wants to turn it back. residents in palo alto you are being washed about two different kinds of scams involving energy and water services. the first one involves someone claiming to be from a gas company. they may try to sell you a product which they claim can help you cut down on your

bills. the city says the scammers will mention pg&e which should be a dead giveaway, because pg&e is not palo alto's utility company. the second scam involves a fake water leak insurance company. that one offers residence insurance against high water bills. 8:06. one of the suspects in a violent string of crimes last week will face a judge. he faces charges of murder, attempted murder and robbery. the two were caught on surveillance video at the 7-11 where the man was shot and killed by the suspects. a $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the second man in this case who is still on the loose. all right, tori. 8:07. the weather is just affecting all of the traffic throughout the bay area. you are looking at the east

bay, right, sal? >> that's right. we're starting in the east bay. we're looking at 80 westbound. it is getting better in the last few hours just as christien kafton said. i think people that had to go got up early. it's still crowded and the weather is a little bitter than ituressed to be. right now it's not rain -- it's not raining. at the bay bridge, it's the same thing. it's light there. there's no major problems getting into the city. contra costa county, highway 4 getting -- even that's getting better a little bit of slowing in bay point. that's about all. we've been looking at slow traffic in the fremont and hayward area. that's still on the slow slide getting south. all right. mostly cloudy, that's an angry sky. the system is kind of winding down. we'll go now cloudy, very muggy. temperatures are really mild. rain pretty good. this is the last one in the series. high pressure is gonna build

in tel aviv. as little alison burns -- as alison burns reports, she's trying to broker a truce. >> reporter: the immediate hope is for a cease-fire that will allow more time for some sort of diplomatic breakthrough. but it seems this morning that hopes are fading. this bus bombing hurt 18 people, three seriously. hamas praised the attack but did not claim responsibility. secretary of state hillary clinton issued a statement saying the u.s. strongly condemns the bombing. and is ready to provide any assistance israel requires. she's in egypt after meetings earlier with israeli and palestinian leaders. crinton is pressing for a cease- fire and a longer term agreement to stop the fighting. >> the goal must be a durable outcome to promotes regional stability and advances the security and legitimate aspirations of israelis and

the missouri mother who told police that her son was plotting a shooting massacre at a movie theater is talking for the first time since his arrest last week. she says her son recently asked if he was a failure. authorities say her son blake had plotted to attack a movie theater and boulevard during the new twilight film. she said her son had undergone mental health treatment. >> i think any mom at any time would blame herself that she did something wrong. >> an investigator said he recently purchased two assault rifles and 400 rounds of ammunitions. he was arrested in 2009 after allegedly following a walmart clerk with a knife and rubber mask after watching the film "halloween." a controversial document menry claims a serial killer may be responsible for the murder of o.j. simpson's ex-wife and her friend, ron goldman. >> he was doing drugs, getting

arrested a lot and traveling across the country when he wasn't in jail. >> in a kim "my brother the serial -- in the film" my brother the serial killer "rogers confessed to the killing and has claimed to have killed 70 people and has been sentenced to death in florida. police say they will investigate the claim but they do not believe that rogers was involved in the murders. san francisco's department of health wants to launch a very aggressive campaign to distribute condoms across the city. the initiative would provide health centers, high schools, office buildings bars and nightclubs with condoms. the department of health wants to invest more than $200,000 on those safe sex materials. that's a big increase compared to 60,000 spent for condoms in 2008. well, the nation's largest group of gynecologists now say that birth control pills should be sold over the counter just like condoms. that's a big surprise for

another group that's been trying to make the pill more accessible for women. however, experts are saying the pill will not be sold without a prescription any time soon. it's 8:19. a record number of americans will use food stamps to buy their thanksgiving dinner this year. the economic policy institute estimates more than 42 million americans will be on food stamps this thanksgiving. that's equivalent to the combined populations of california and connecticut. the u.s. department of agriculture says use of food stamps has increased 70% since 2007. time now, just about 8:20. there's some encouraging news about a school in the east bay, a high school, where there are reports about weapons and drugs and alcohol use that dropped. and it's a wet wednesday. steve paulson will tell us what kind of weather we can expect during tomorrow's thanksgiving holiday. and good morning.

we have video of panicked hikers in new zealand running away as a nearby volcano erupts. this erupted earlier today for the second time in three months. you can see the black dust and

smoke rising from the active volcano. scientists say the eruption was completely unexpected. but everyone got off the mountain safely. some victims of hurricane sandy are getting help from some people who are very familiar with their struggle. survivors of hurricane katrina. the group of students and typers from mississippi traveled north to new jersey this week to help clean up debris and rebuild homes. it will -- they will be spendge the entire week there including the thanksgiving holiday. the volunteers say a lot of people came and helped them after hurricane katrina hit their community so they just want to return the favor. >> great story, tori. 78:24. there's a new survey of berkeley high school students suggesting that fewer students are taking weapons to school or they are coming to campus under the influence of drugs and alcohol. 0% of juniors reported taking a weapon to school this year.

that's down from 15%. the number of 11th graders coming to school under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, that also fell to 35% down from 55% in 2008. all right. 8:24. want to check in with sal. see what's happening on 880 in oakland. you know a lot of people use that to get to the airport in oakland. we also checked in with the airport parking. so far it's not completely full but it definitely is getting a lot of use. this is 880 northbound right near the airport. it will be slow. today's kind of the in-between day. people will be traveling. it will be a very busy travel day. but the commute patterns might be different. in can years past, we've seen people getting on the road as early as noon to get out of town, get out of the city, places like that. it's a travel day but not necessarily a commute day for a lot of people. let's take a look at the westbound bay bridge. that's what i mean. you don't have the typical guy

going into the office 9:to 5:00 -- 9:00 to 5:00. but you do have people getting around the area. this is the nimitz freeway, traffic has improved quite a bit. likewise for highway 4. we are getting a little bit of improvement and that also goes for the santa clara valley where things have been improving. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. we do have mostly cloudy skies. but dare i say, dare, dare, there's some breaks in the clouds to the west and also to the north. you can see it right there. i think we'll get some sun in here as the rain winds down but not bad. an inch and a quarter in san francisco. about .25 to 1 covered most of it. not too much left. again, these are out towards vacaville, afield, closer to the sacramento radar site there coming around. it looks like finally rain.

it's amazing how it targets it doesn't want to get let go. in the santa clara valley things are pushing south. most of this is about over with. very mild. it does feel cooler. maybe a west wind kicking in. high pressure is on the way. but there will still be some clouds. so partly cloudy to mostly cloudy. rain, drizzle ending. some sun, mild conditions. the rain is done for a while. maybe -- but until then it will be nice on the coast. there will be some big-time, heavy-duty fog out to the valley. keep an eye out for that if you are driving this holiday weekend. two fires in three days at one east bay apartment building. why investigators think those fires may be connected. >> we're live in san jose where at this hour, police are trying to track down the driver of a car that hit and killed a man this morning.

we're tracking breaking news of a fatal accident that's happened in san jose. janine de la vega is at the scene with the latest on what happened and also how it is aif hing traffic. ja -- how it is affecting traffic. janine. >> reporter: police are on the scene and they are keeping cars away from alum rock and jackston. all of the roads leading up to here are blocked off. right where you see the tent

there, the bodied of a pedestrian is lying under there. a car traveling westbound hit him and kept on driving. there were people in the area who witnessed the accident and called 911. fire crews arrived to help but the man was pronounced dead. the traffic investigation unit is gathering evidence and speaking to those witnesses. officers want to track down that driver. >> all we have on that vehicle is it is a dark-colored sedan. unknown make or moodle. we're still talking to -- model. we're still talking to witnesses. after the vehicle was struck, a second vehicle hit as well and he is cooperating with the investigation. >> reporter: police are in the middle of talking to that second driver. investigators are not releasing any information about the victim except that he was an adult male. they say it appears he was not

using the crosswalk when he was hit. police are diverting traffic. back out here live, the eastbound lanes of alum rock are -- are open but the westbound lanes are not. but really, police are asking people to completely avoid this area. if anybody has any information about that dark sedan that they are looking for other information on this accident, they sure would appreciate a call. reporting live from, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:31. new this morning, firefighters in antioch, they are at the scene of an early-morning apartment building fire. this one started about 5:00 a.m. at the delta view apartments on delta fair boulevard. that very same building caught fire monday night. investigators don't know yet if today's fire is a new one or if it is an old flareup. ten people were displaced in monday's fire which was considered an accident. so far there's no word of anyone hurt in today's fire. 8:32. fire investigators in vallejo are trying to figure out

whether a suspicious fire is connected to a string of arsons in that city. the latest fire monday night damaged a home on tennessee street. last week, firefighters responded to three arsons within 12 hours. monday night's fire was in the same area and investigators say there are some similarities to the other cases. it is one of the busiest travel days of the year at bay area airports. ktvu's christien kafton is live at sfo with more on what you can expect if you are planning to catch a flight today. is this morning's rain caucusing any delay -- rain causing any rain delays. >> reporter: no. the duty manager here at sfo says things are running smoothly. take a look at ter -- take a look at terminal 2. this is the virgin america check-in terminal. earlier it was busy. but again, things are running pretty smoothly. the airport duty manager tells me things are busy at the

airport today, as to be expected on the day before thig, but things are running on schedule. it was a different story last night into early this morning when 81 flights were canceled in and out of sfo due to the rain. the faa put a restriction on how many flights could land. some passengers were prepared and showed up early. >> i left very early this morning to get here. >> reporter: coming back out to our live, you can see right now it's actually pretty smooth going here. we did check with the airport duty manager. she says there are a few delays for flights coming into the bay area from the northeast, the boston air area and from the -- area and from the chicago area. we checked with the big board and the delays are from fort lauderdale and boston. the delays can stack up over the day. the best advice if you are gonna fly in and out. if you are gonna be flying in

or out, be sure you get to the airport, we will continue to monitor the situation here at sfo to see if any of the delays do crop up. for now we're live at sfo, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. law enforcement agencies are warning bay area drivers to obey the rules of the road. the dow crackdown be -- the dui crackdown begins tonight at 6:00 p.m. and will run until monday. nearly 40% of fatal collisions involve an impaired driver. the chp will be under maximum enforcement. 8:34. police are searching for a man raping a woman in broad daylight. police say they found the victim standing on the corner of international boulevard wearing only underwear. now the victim believed to be as young as 17 years old said she was raped in the car. police have not given us a description of the suspect but they say he may be driving a

light blue older model cadillac. a san francisco deputy sheriff still on the job after pleading not guilty to merchandise charges stemming from an -- misdemeanor charges stemming from an out---control argument -- out-of control argument. green has entered a not guilty plea to charges of brandishing a weapon, felony conspiracy and making criminal threats. now the deputy's lawyer said she was only trying to calm things down but according to department policy she's now on administrative duty. it is 8:36. san francisco is one step closer to requiring nudists to cover up. >> shame on you! shame on you! >> yesterday, at the board of supervisors meeting angry

parter in and the white house says the -- partner and the white house says the presidents to myanmar demonstrate how democracy can influence other countries. ben bernanke is pushing congress and the obama administration to reach an agreement on a deal to avoid tax increases and spending cuts. the so-called fiscal cliff. bernanke says without a deal, the fiscal cliff could trigger a recession next year. congress must act by january 1st in order to avoid the automatic tax increases and spending cuts. happening right now, a court hear something underway. a bankruptcy judge is expected to decide on a motion to allow hostess to liquidate. the hearing comes after hostess failed to reach a deal with its striking bakers union. more than 18,000 people are expected to lose their jobs if hostess goes out of business. well, the labor department released the weekly job report
